Discover something new with our feed recommendations

$

0

One of the best aspects of RSS content readers is that, unlike social networks, you are in complete control of your information sources. You say "I want to get updates from X, Y and Z and you know you will never see anything from a source that you don't trust. This is great and all, but what if there are already other sources that post excellent content and you've missed them for some reason? If you don't switch to discovery mode every now and then, you will stay in the dark, while content is just there, waiting for you.

Today, we are introducing our new feed recommendation system, called "Feeds you might like" and here's how it works.
Occasionally while you browse your subscriptions the new feature will trigger. It will check the context you are currently in and will try to recommend you the most relevant sources to the surrounding content. We have spent a lot of time optimizing the recommendation system and we hope it will be useful to you.
If you don't like recommendations and prefer not to be bothered, simply click "Do not show this again" and it they will disappear forever.
You can also always get recommendations based on any source at any time just by right-clicking the feed in your tree and choosing "More like this" from the menu:

What do you think about the new feature? Do you like it or hate it? Can we improve it for you? Tell us below.

Read your password protected feeds with Inoreader

$
0
0

Most of the RSS feeds you will find in the wild are publicly available as they should be. However there are certain situations where RSS is used in closed environments and in those cases you will usually get an RSS feed protected with Basic HTTP Authentication. If you open the feed in your browser, you will be prompted to enter your username and password and you will see its contents. Naturally you might think that your RSS reader should be able to read the feed since you can preview it in your browser, but RSS readers use their own crawlers to fetch the feeds and your authentication information is normally not passed to them. So when you add such feed to your RSS reader, it receives an error and tells you that it cannot find the feed.

As always Inoreader has a solution in place. Just go on and paste the URL of such feed in the search field and press Enter. You will see a screen similar to this:

Click the link to enter your credentials and you will be able to subscribe. From there on it's like you're subscribed to a regular feed. Nice!

If you need to change your password, open the feed information dialog from Feed settings or by right-clicking on the feed in the subscription tree. There you will see a button to change the credentials:

Here are some use cases when password protected feeds might come in handy:

Password protected feeds are available for Plus and Professional accounts. You can test-drive this and more exciting features by starting a 1-month free Professional trial.

Please note that Basic HTTP authentication cannot use encrypted passwords, so we need to store your password in our database. If you don't feel comfortable with this, please use different passwords for the RSS feeds when possible.

Inoreader for teams now allows you to securely collaborate on content

$
0
0

You probably already use Inoreader for your daily dose of fresh content. But have you wondered how such a tool can help you in your workplace?

Today's update can give you the answer.

Introducing Inoreader for teams

Inoreader for teams is our new plan, crafted specifically for people who want to collaborate on content with their co-workers, students or friends. What's so special about it? Let's jump into the essentials. You can create teams with your colleagues, students or friends. Those teams are like closed groups where you can broadcast (share) articles securely and comment on them. All comments are seen only between members of the teams that the article has been broadcast to. And that's a great way to improve the flow of information in your organization.
To make sure no one misses an update in the teams, push notifications are sent to all members for all activity by default. This can be turned off of course. Push notifications work with our mobile applications.

Who will benefit from Inoreader for teams?

Inoreader for teams is aimed primarily at professionals who rely on information and need to distribute that data to people inside or outside their organization.

For example, a marketing agency could follow specific topics or brands thanks to our Global search or Twitter feeds. Every member of the team can follow different keywords and then broadcast interesting results to everyone else, thus distributing the load between team members.

A teacher might want to share interesting finds with their class, stimulating conversation between students.

A news publishing team can respond quickly to breaking news and events from all over the world.

Professional bloggers can filter incoming news stories and discuss priority among their team.

Information professionals can curate and annotate relevant articles from their line of industry.

Convinced?

Jump straight into Teams section in your Inoreader to start.

Have more questions?

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions below:

Do I need a Team account to join a team?
No. There is no requirement on the type of your account to be able to join a team.

What other premium features are available to team members?
All team members are automatically upgraded to our Professional plan.

Are there any limits on the number of teams I can create?
No, there is no actual limit on the number of teams, only team members are being counted.

How are team members being counted?
We only count the unique team members of your complete organization so if you have the same person in multiple teams, we only count them once.

What happens when I reach my plan's limit?
You can continue to add as many members as you'd like. When you exceed the allowed number of team members, you will receive a warning and you will have to upgrade your plan shortly after that. Failing to do so will result in suspending the most recently added team members.

What happens when my plan expires?
All team plans have automatic billing enabled. If you cancel your billing or there’s an issue processing your payment, your plan might expire. All teams and team members will be preserved (though they will be downgraded from the Professional plan). The articles that are already broadcast to the teams will be available, but you and your team members won't be allowed to broadcast new articles.

Can I have more than 100 team members?
If you have a bigger organization we will tailor a custom plan for you. Please contact us for more information.

Have even more questions?

As always we look forward to your feedback on how we can improve this new feature even more.

Additions to rules #4 (new triggers and chaining of multiple rules)

$
0
0

If you are already using Inoreader, chances are that you already use rules or at least heard of them.
Simply said they are an automatic way to organize and manage articles in your Inoreader, just like you organize your email. If you haven't had the chance, check out our previous posts about how to save time with rules, additions to rules #1, additions to rules #2 and additions to rules #3.

Previously rules could only operate on incoming articles. There were 3 options - if articles arrive in your account, folder or subscription. This means that it was impossible to attach rules to stars, tags, active searches or other actions. This is changing today!

Now you can attach rules to trigger on other actions. Here the full list:

  • New article in account
  • New article in folder
  • New article in subscription
  • New active search result
  • New tagged article
  • New starred article
  • New liked article
  • New broadcasted article
  • New saved web page
  • Another rule matched successfully

The last one is particularly interesting. It will allow you to chain multiple rules to work together, so you could create really complex rule sets.
We also did some optimizations last week to further improve rules performance and to finally squash the bug where filtered feeds with rules attached to them sometimes triggered rules for already filtered articles.

We are always open for suggestions and issue reports. As a reminder here's how to send your feedback.

Inoreader API now supports OAuth 2.0

$
0
0

Good news everyone! The Inoreader API now supports OAuth 2.0 for user authentication.
Developers can now build better Sign In flows that doesn't require users to enter passwords in their apps.

Why OAuth 2.0?

Our previous method for authenticating was the ClientLogin method, which required users to enter their credentials - username (or email) and password. Developers then receive a token which they can use to call the API without the need to store those credentials, but nevertheless they are required initially, which is not comfortable for some users. Additionally after we launched our developer portal and had to add rate limiting to prevent abuse, we needed a way to distinguish between different apps, so developers were required to use application authentication in parallel with user authentication. This made using the API more complicated than it needs to be.
OAuth 2.0 takes care of both issues at once.

How do I use OAuth 2.0?

OAuth looks like a complex protocol, but it's really not and because it is so widely used nowadays in its standard form, chances are you already know how to use it if you are a developer. Our documentation provides all the necessary details for you to get started.

How will users benefit from this?

First, it's obvious that OAuth 2.0 is more secure than having to enter credentials in 3rd party applications. Then come the additional perks:

  • New users can register directly in 3rd party apps, because the sign in / registration flow is handled on Inoreader's side.
  • Users can see the apps they have authorized in Preferences -> Apps and Extensions and can revoke access to those apps at any time.
  • Users can use Google or Facebook login methods to access your app.
  • Apps that don't need to change data can use the new read-only permission.

How will developers benefit from this?

Having new users register directly will lead to more conversions. You won't need to deal with user credentials anymore, meaning you have nothing to explain, especially people use Google or Facebook login. You also don't need to use application authentication anymore, because it is handled by our OAuth implementation. Finally ClientLogin will be deprecated at some point, so it's good to be prepared for the future.

The all-new Inoreader for Android is here!

You can also read this post in Chinese.

If you've been using our Android app you might have noticed that we haven't updated it in the past couple of months. Fear not, we have not abandoned you! On the contrary - we decided to rewrite it from scratch. We’ll be the first to admit that up until now our Android application wasn't the greatest piece of software you can use. It wasn't engineered well and it crashed a lot. The navigation was also a bit outdated with only back-forward action.

We are proud to present version 4.0 of our Android app.

Here are some of the highlights of the new version:

Completely new navigation with expandable folders. You can now switch between sections faster than ever. You can also find quick access to the settings at the bottom of the menu.

Redesigned magazine view with bigger thumbnails and а completely new card view will allow you to scan through photo blogs or news sites quicker and better.

The new context menus look better than before while retaining the same quick functionality you are used to so you don't need to adapt to something completely new.

Of course, we did not forget about themes and where would Inoreader be without its famous dark theme. We even added optimization for AMOLED screens, so you will conserve energy while using Inoreader on such a device.

Here are some other changes that deserve mention:
  • New "Home" section where you will see the most relevant news from your subscriptions
  • Ability to set a start screen by long-pressing an item from the tree. This will make the app always start from that selection.
  • Modern design according to Google's Material Design specifications
  • Gestures have been removed for now, because they were the reason for most of the crashes. Fear not, they will be available again in one of the next versions.

Please take into consideration that this is the first public release of a whole new app. If you spot any issues or have a suggestion, do not hesitate to contact us. You can write in the comments below or contact us in any other way that is convenient for you.

A new way to send articles to your mobile devices

$

Ever wondered what is the best way to send an article to your mobile phone while reading it on inoreader.com? While there are many ways to do this (stars, tags), none is as straightforward as our new "Send to device" feature.

While reading any article on the web version of Inoreader, open the three-dots menu and click "Send to device". You will get a list of all your connected iOS or Android devices where you can choose to which one you want to send the article. It will immediately appear as a push notification on your device. You are then just a tap away from opening the article and continue reading it on your phone or tablet.

As usual your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Magazine view for HTML clips

$

We are updating our HTML clips today with support for magazine view. Instead of showing the full content of each article, you will now have an image, title and a summary of the article. The clip will look cleaner and more streamlined this way. All newly created HTML clips will use magazine view by default, but we will not change the default behavior for current clips. If you want to switch your current clips to magazine view, either generate a new URL from our "Get HTML clip" function or just append ?cs=m as parameter (use & instead of ? if you already have other parameters in the URL) to your clip URL.

Read more about our HTML clips and how you can use them to embed your Inoreader feeds, broadcasts, tags and more in this blog post.

About today's outage

$
0
0

You can also read this post in Chinese.

Today we had our first major database crash and to tell you that we were fully prepared will be a lie. We weren't. Due to human error during regular maintenance work, we've simultaneously lost two database servers (master and slave) and their data. Backups are in place, but due to the huge amounts of data and some other issues, it will take time for restoration.

What is affected:
  • Articles older than 3 days will not be available at the moment. This includes saved web pages and mail2tag emails.
What isn't affected:
  • All other user data like your settings, credentials, folders, subscriptions, connections, etc.
The service is restored with the last 3 days worth of data and new articles should arrive as before. Active searches, rules and all other features should work as before. During the next several days we will work around the clock to restore older data.

As a compensation, we have activated full Professional plan for all users for 2 months (Until August 01)! Current premium users will be compensated with 2 months of extension of their plans!

We sincerely apologize to our clients and we can assure you that we are taking all the necessary precautions to never let this happen again.
We will update this post when we have more information on the recovery.

Transparency report: data recovery update

$
0
0

You can also read this post in Chinese.

We wanted to update you all on the status of the data recovery that we are currently performing.

TLDR: Your data is safe!

As you probably already know, last Friday, we had a pretty serious outage, resulting in complete data loss of one article storage node, consisting of two servers. Due to operational error, a simple command intended for only one of the servers replicated to both of them, just few days before a scheduled full backup and archival. This was a huge operational mistake from our side that will not happen again as we are taking pretty serious measures against that.
This node was holding article content data from August 2015 until now. Both servers had a total of 6TB of data. Immediately after realizing the mistake, we shut down the application to prevent further data corruption (polling servers use those nodes to check for older articles in order not to duplicate them). Servers were immediately shut down to minimize chances of overwriting of the data. A technician was immediately dispatched to boot the servers from USB drive and mount the filesystems are read-only. We were able to salvage 3 days worth of data from the transaction logs of the databases, which we then used to feed a new temporary database and to start the service with this data. That's why on Friday you had only 3 days of article history. Unfortunately we also had to stop certain feeds from updating, because they don't contain dates of the articles and we can't be sure if they are not already in the crashed database. To allow all articles to be inserted meant to duplicate a huge number of feeds and then for many users duplicate them second time when we restore the database. This limit is still enforced and will be like that until we finally recover the full database.

After the service was restored, we started extracting raw data form the filesystems. This is a very long process, since it is performed on very low level, but just few hours ago it finally finished. From those files we can finally extract tabular data that can be fed into a database. This is what we are doing right now. Judging by the speed of extraction, our initial estimation for Saturday June 4 still holds and we might be able to finish even on Friday. Data will be 100% restored by then!

We will inform you of the progress in this post and we'll try to update it as often as possible.
Progress:
  • Phase 1 (extracting raw data into files): 100% completed...
  • Phase 2 (generating readable data from files): 100% completed... ETA: Friday June 3
  • Phase 3 (loading data into the databases): 16% completed... ETA: Saturday June 4
  • Progress last updated: June 3 3PM GMT

Here at Inoreader we take this very seriously and we are already changing our internal procedures and ordering new hardware to make sure such incidents doesn't happen again.

As you probably know, we have activated a complimentary Professional plan to all users until August 01 as a compensation. All current premium users using annual plans were automatically extended with 2 months and all subscribers on rebilling (monthly) plans will very soon receive coupons on their emails to activate 2 months of Professional service.

Data recovery complete!

Following up on the recent events, we are glad to inform you that databases have been recovered and running in production again. You should be able to see all articles now.

We are now running a data integrity check on all articles now, which will take at least a week, to be sure that nothing is missing. Even if we find missing articles, we have means to restore them. For now it looks like everything is here.
Since we are rebuilding caches the service might run slower than usual for a while. If you spot any issues, do not hesitate to send us feedback.

New goodies - video indicators, printable hotkeys and more

$
0
0
Here at Inoreader we are always working hard to improve your experience. We are always fixing bugs and issues with priority, but in the mean time we are also developing new features and improving the current ones. Here are the most notable changes that are available since this week.

Indicators for videos in card view

Card view is very comfortable for feeds with lots of media, but for some feeds it's not obvious if the article contains a video or a still image. That's why we've added a handy icon at the top-left corner of the card to indicate if the article inside contains a video.

Print hotkeys cheat-sheet

By learning Inoreader's powerful hotkeys, you can become a real RSS ninja. But remembering every hotkey is just not possible at once and sometimes it's easier to have them somewhere off-screen, but still near you. That's why we've added a handy new option to print them on paper. Use landscape orientation for best results.

Instapaper folder selection

You can now choose a folder from your Instapaper account when saving articles there. Just click the arrow icon and choose your Instapaper folder. You can also set a default folder that will be used when you click on the Instapaper icon by going to Preferences -> Integration

Changing your password will now (optionally) sign you off from all devices

Security is as important as new features, so we took some time to add a new option (enabled by default) to sign off your account from all devices and services it has been signed on. You can optionally turn this off if you are sure that you (and only you) have access to those devices.

Mobile apps

We've also updated our Android and iOS apps recently.
  • Android - Automatic backups will now allow you to restore the app's state when reinstalling Android
  • iOS - we've added a new option to use the standard iOS sharing sheet if you prefer it. Note that this way you will not be able to sync with services like Pocket and Evernote through our backend.
  • All mobile apps - article thumbnails in magazine view are now served through a global distribution network (CDN), so they should load faster than before.
  • We are working on push notifications for Windows Phone. Stand by...

We are very grateful to have such active community. Most of those features were suggested and discussed in our forums, Twitter and other channels. You are always welcome to share your feedback and help us shape the future of Inoreader!

Now we are releasing a version of Inoreader that allows you to subscribe effortlessly to YouTube playlists. This way you will be the first to know when there is a new video added to the playlist. To subscribe, just copy its URL and paste it inside our search. The URL should be in this format:

Track your current position in a section with our new progress indicator

$

We are happy to announce to you our latest feature. A small and unobtrusive progress bar will now show up in the footer. It will tell you how many articles you've scrolled by and how many are left. It works in all views, but only in "Unread only" mode.
In its second form it will show as a blue line at the bottom of the screen whenever you open an article in card view or magazine view. This way you will always know how many articles you have left to read in the current section without needing to close the one that you are currently reading.

Here's a little screencast to help you see it in action:

If for some reason you dislike it, you can easily turn it off by closing the footer or going to Preferences -> Interface -> Article listing and unchecking Article progressbar.

As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Fully customize your tree pane

$
0
0

Inoreader has always been the power-user multi-tool. It goes beyond your regular RSS reader by allowing you to heavily customize it, organize your content and automate workflows. However so much power features can have a side effect - the user interface might get cramped for you, especially if you don't use all of the features.
That's why we have added the possibility to fully customize your tree pane. You can access the configurator in two ways:

  1. By scrolling down to the bottom of the tree and clicking Configure tree items.
  2. From the gear that shows when you hover your mouse over the tree.

Use drag and drop to rearrange the tree sections and the checkboxes to hide the ones that you don't use. Some of the section only show up when there is content (like Tags for example), so you might not have them in the tree pane yet. See it in action in this short screencast

We've also upgraded our drag&drop functionality in the tree pane itself, so it should now be smoother and will allow you to put feeds inside folders without first expanding them.

We hope that the newest addition to our arsenal of features will help you stay productive by allowing you even more control over how Inoreader looks and behaves.

Performance problems with latest version of Google Chrome 52.0.2743.116

$
0
0

We have detected that the latest build of Google Chrome causes serious performance issues on both Mac and PC. The version in question is 52.0.2743.116 on the stable channel, but newer versions might be affected too.

The problem is manifesting in completely different ways on Windows and OS X.

On Windows you might notice jerkiness and stuttering while scrolling large article lists. Frame rate drops significantly while scrolling, even though CPU usage stays below 15%.

On OS X we do not observe such stuttering, but loading of new articles while using the infinite scroll takes much longer - somewhere between 1 and 3 seconds between each batch, instead of the normal 50-200 milliseconds (depending on your network latency). If you constantly see "Loading..." message while scrolling down since yesterday, this is the probable cause.

As a temporary solution you might use another browser until Google fixes those issues. We have tested Firefox, Safari and Edge and they don't suffer from those issues.

We have tried to play with the settings in about://flags, but without success.
We will try to gather as much details as possible and file a bug on the Chromium tracker. In the mean time if you experience any of those issues, we recommend you to use another browser. If you find a workaround for those issues, be sure to post a comment here. Other users experiencing the same issues will be thankful to you and we will be too.
